Two different measurement systems are used – the American USP system (United States Pharmacopeia) and the metric system. In addition to the material used, the strength of the suture is decisive for the strength of a surgical suture. As a general rule, the suture material should always be as thin as possible: The aim is therefore sufficient tensile strength with as little tissue damage as possible. In the case of absorbable suture material, the thickness also has an influence on the dissolution process to be performed by the body. - The suture thickness printed on the packaging is always the minimum thickness; the actual suture thickness is usually in the upper millimetre range.
